The Mid-Shore Fishing Club (formerly MSSA Dorchester) held it’s annual Kids Fishing Derby at Long Wharf Park on August 4th. The event was a success as the weather held out and 59 kids caught over 300 fish. MSFC had 21 club members on site, registering the kids, cutting the bait, netting fish, and just making sure all went well. It sure did. Prizes were awarded for first and second place in each eligible species, but every kid walked away with a prize (rod and reel combo , a tackle box, a tee shirt or a hat. They could choose off our prize table. Kids were also awarded a certificate of participation and a honorary membership in Mid-Shore Fishing Club. Water and pizza were provided as the award ceremony was capped off. A list of the eligible species and the winning entries: 1st place rockfish (our premier species) Corey Brummell with a 25 5/8 ” monster. 2nd place was a tie with Zachary Lawrence and Parker Searcy each catching a 20”er. 1st place white perch was Mackenzie McCarter with a 11 ¼” and 2nd place was Riley Hubbard with a 10 ½”er. 1st place catfish was Landen Kimbal with a 21”er and Aubrie Todd with a 19 1/4 “er. 1st place spot went to Jonathan Smith at 7 ½” and 2nd place to Ah’mir Dodd with a 7 ¼”er. There was one croaker caught by Mikey Mullinex at 11 5/8”, which is good news for the fishing community that croakers are showing up.
